As part of the resolve to connect the whole country by rail, the Federal Government has approved the sum of $5.3 billion for the Ibadan - Kano standard gauge rail project.
Disclosing this at the just concluded the 3rd Maritime Stakeholders Interactive Forum in Lagos, the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaech, also said that arrangements are on to secure funding to commence coastal rail for the Port-Harcourt -Warri segment.
The Minister, who admitted to abandoning the maritime sector to Heads of Agencies in his first tenure, assured that all that will change as the Minister of State, Gbemisola Saraki will be in charge of all maritime agencies while he will focus on the railway sector.
"There are two things I discussed with Mr. President that I will be focusing on in this second term as Minister, and they are maritime security and the Single Window Project. I have assured government that by the end of 2020, we should have the Single Window at our maritime sector,” he said.
On maritime security, the Minister lamented that the Israeli firm, HSLI that was awarded the project since 2017 are yet to commence operations. The Minister, who was obviously not pleased with the excuse that the delay was as a result of the time it took to procure the items, ordered that he be briefed promptly about security situation in the nation’s maritime space.
